“A Change in Perspective” Sadly, this spring, we lost two chicken sisters, Mildred and Myrtle. Marianne is a lone chicken now and she showed signs of distress. She stopped eating her feed, and wasn’t even interested in the expensive meal worms I’d gotten. The few eggs she laid were weak shelled and then she stopped laying altogether. The saddest thing to witness was she didn’t even want to leave the garage. I’m not sure what a chicken goes through when they lose friends. Perhaps she was in mourning. Perhaps she had trauma from witnessing what happened to them. I can only go by what I observed. She was not acting the same. Marianne wouldn’t leave the safety of the garage without an escort. Call me crazy if you want but I swear the pig, William, had an understanding of the situation. Molly too, seemed sympathetic. I observed the two of them, on more than one occasion, taking turns being with Marianne. The goat would leave the garage with Marianne following and go out to feed while William napped and then William would waddle out, the chicken would switch to shadowing the pig and Molly would retreat for a nap. It made sense that Marianne felt safe being with these larger friends. She could then relax enough to feed on the bugs and worms. I decided to join in supporting Marianne. I knew what she would like to do. I decided to dig in the flower bed with her. To be honest, I hate weeding! I’ve allowed the flowers to battle the weeds without me and the flowers aren’t fairing too well. But, I knew that digging in the dirt would bring Marianne pleasure so my perspective about weeding shifted. I didn’t think of it as weeding the flowers, I was just keeping Marianne company for a bit. I been making it a daily practice to weed with Marianne. She struts after me when she sees I have my garden claw. She clucks and coos while I scratch in the dirt with my metal prongs that look and behave like a giant chicken foot. She joins in the dirt scratching with gusto. With her sharp vision, she grabs grubs and worms before I notice them. Weeding in this way has become enjoyable! It’s enjoyable to watch Marianne light up and interact with the activity of weeding. A task that I didn’t care for, was no longer a chore. I had shifted my perspective. I was supporting my feathered friend, Marianne, who had lost her sisters. I was digging in the dirt, pulling some weeds because it made me happy to make Marianne happy. With this change in perspective, I discovered that weeding wasn’t distasteful, it was actually peaceful, joyful! Weeding got done while I was being present with Marianne! If I could change my perspective about weeding, perhaps I could do the same with other activities. What if I could find the joy in Fred’s irritating habits? I’ve spent 33 years getting pissed off with my husband’s sleep walking eating habits. Finding food reserved for a special occasion, like a birthday cake, with a gouge out of the center or discovering milk in the cupboard or crumbs on the furniture. What if I approached it from a place of curiosity and playfulness, like I did weeding with Marianne? I could treat every morning like a treasure hunt! “Wonder what I’ll find today?” I could say to myself with a chuckle. I’m so motivated by the experience with the chicken, perhaps I will try it with Fred! At Crow Moon Healing, we encourage experiencing and learning from Marianne, the chicken and all the animal friends. ****************************************************************************** Up coming events at Crow Moon Healing Bed and Breakfast Healing the Red Thread: An Ancestral Healing Workshop The weekend of June 22-23, 2019 Crow Moon Healing • 6472 Breunig Road, rural Mazomanie, WI The genetics passed down to us from our ancestors determine the color of our eyes and hair. Our forebears lived close to the earth, deeply in tune with her cycles and seasons, the elements and nature. In this connection, they found their spirituality. They believed that every living being had a spirit- not just people, but also animals, trees, stones, and plants. They commonly traveled into the spirit realm to communicate and interact with power animals, spirit guides and nature spirits. Through exploring the basics of shamanism, we can rekindle our connection to the divine and develop our ability to communicate directly with Spirit to receive guidance on our spiritual path.
